WTA Finals: Ons Jabeur Will Give Palestinians A Share Of The Prize Money

After defeating Marketa Vondrousova in the Wimbledon final on Wednesday, an emotional Ons Jabeur said that she will give away a portion of her WTA Finals winnings to the Palestinian people.

At the season-ending finals in Cancun, Tunisia’s Jabeur, fresh off her first victory of the week, held back tears as she spoke on the court.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-263688″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-in-2023-kyle-jamieson-will-be-covering-the-icc-cricket-world-cup-for-new-zealand-a.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com in 2023 kyle jamieson will be covering the icc cricket world cup for new zealand a” width=”1300″ height=”810″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-in-2023-kyle-jamieson-will-be-covering-the-icc-cricket-world-cup-for-new-zealand-a.jpg 284w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-in-2023-kyle-jamieson-will-be-covering-the-icc-cricket-world-cup-for-new-zealand-a-150×93.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1300px) 100vw, 1300px” title=”WTA Finals: Ons Jabeur Will Give Palestinians A Share Of The Prize Money 3″>

“I’m thrilled about the victory, but lately, I haven’t felt happy,” said the first Arabic woman to make it to a Grand Slam final.

Jabeur sobbed and continued, “The state of the world doesn’t make me happy,” before gathering the courage to discuss the Israel-Hamas war.

“Watching kids die, babies dying every day, is really difficult,” she said.

I’ve made the terrible decision to give the Palestinians a portion of my award money.

“With everything going on, I can’t be content with simply one victory. I apologize to everyone; I know this is meant to be about tennis, but watching movies all day long becomes very old.

I apologize; this is merely a message of compassion, not politics. That is all I want in this world: peace.

Later, the 29-year-old Jabeur said that it had been difficult to concentrate on her tennis during her post-match news conference.

Jabeur said, “I try to stay off social media as much as I can, but it’s very tough.”

“Every day, you see films and terrible, terrible photographs. I find it difficult to sleep or heal, and worst of all, it makes me feel hopeless.

Donating a little amount of money could be able to ease some of their suffering. However, I am aware that money is meaningless to them at the moment. I thus hope that everyone will live in freedom and true harmony.

Jabeur’s last hope of making it to the Mexican semifinals is to defeat world No. 2 Iga Swiatek in Friday’s last round-robin match.
