Shabana Azmi ‘blasted’ at Karan Johar as he acknowledged that SRK-Kajol’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was problematic

One of Karan Johar’s most well-known films in Indian cinema is still his directing debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which came out in 1998. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji, the movie was a huge success with kids and has held up well over time. Despite all the abundant affection, the movie has received backlash over the years for its toxic masculinity, which implies that a woman needs to feel attractive and affirmed by a male in order to be loved. In fact, Karan acknowledged that the movie had issues just a few years before.

In 2019, Karan acknowledged the film’s issues at the Melbourne Indian Film Festival. Shabana Azmi even took a swipe at him for the same. “KKHH is the most politically incorrect film,” he said. Actress Shabana Azmi phoned me after she viewed the movie in the UK, as I recall. In his remarks, he remarked, “She was appalled.

Kajol plays Anjali in the early part of the movie, a short-haired tomboy who is secretly in love with her closest buddy Rahul (SRK). But Rahul had a thing for the chic and uber-feminine Tina (Rani). After almost eight years, Tina has undergone a dramatic makeover. She no longer wears jeans, has long hair, and has begun wearing sarees.

“What have you shown?,” she informed me, he continued. That a female, whose hair was formerly short and hence unattractive, now has long hair and is attractive? What comments do you have about this? I apologized. What, she asked? All you have to say is that? I agreed since I am aware of your accuracy.

KJo has also shared details regarding the movie’s casting process: “I was thrilled to meet SRK. He had promised to collaborate with Kajol in my first picture. I recounted a scenario to him that I had in mind before I went to see him; I didn’t have a screenplay. He fell for my bluster! I lied to him fully when I said, “If you like this one scene, I’ll narrate the entire film to you.” I was rejected by Tabu, Urmila (Urmila Matondkar), and Aishwarya (Aishwarya Rai), and Ash was the only one who was kind enough to give me a call back. Months passed before Rani was cast, despite Aditya Chopra’s recommendation.

Karan Johar made his directing debut in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai with SRK. The movie just wrapped its 25 years.
