Ravindra, who was recently awarded the ICC Emerging Player of the Year title, has been called up to the BlackCaps side for their two-match Test series against the Proteas, which will begin at Tauranga’s Bay Oval next week.

The 24-year-old is expected to bat in the middle order for the first time in his Test career after being added to the lineup in place of Henry Nicholls. Will Young will provide batting backup, according to New Zealand Cricket (NZC).

In 2021–22, Ravindra made his Test debut against India in Kanpur. He then earned another cap in Mumbai before traveling back to New Zealand to participate in the first Test against Bangladesh that summer.

Glenn Phillips, who made his Test debut against Australia in 2019–20 and participated in both Tests during the early season trip to Bangladesh, will accompany him. This will be Phillips’ maiden Test on home soil.

Will O’Rourke, a fast bowler, has been called up to the New Zealand A side for the four-day Test series against Australia A. He may make his Test debut after making his ODI debut earlier this month. The team will be together for the second game at Seddon Park in Hamilton.

Mitch Santner, an all-rounder, was also kept in the team after making significant contributions with the bat and ball in Bangladesh.

The two members of the Bangladesh touring team, Ajaz Patel and Ish Sodhi, are not selected because the selection committee is looking for a different balance for the anticipated circumstances.

With so many players raising their hands and circumstances to take into account, head coach Gary Stead stated it was difficult to choose the team.

As a selector, it pleased me to see several players contribute in the most recent series in Bangladesh. Due to their recent success in red ball cricket, Glenn and Mitch were both selected. To participate in a variety of forms and circumstances, they are still refining their games, the speaker said.

He conceded that certain difficult decisions had to be taken, such as excluding Ish Sodhi, Ajaz Patel, and Henry Nicholls. “Over the last 14 months, all three players have contributed significantly to performances that have won Tests. However, we think we’ve successfully balanced expertise with giving younger players opportunity,” he added.

Even though a few players on the team had recently missed cricket matches owing to injuries, Stead said that everyone was feeling well ahead of the first game of the series. “The stages of recovery for Tom Blundell, Kyle Jamieson, and Kane Williamson are all a little bit different. However, we’re sure they’ll be ready to play at Bay Oval,” Stead said.

The following players—Will O’Rourke (second Test only), Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitch Santner, Neil Wagner, Kane Williamson, Will Young, and Tim Southee, Tom Blundell, Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell

Before the first Test at Bay Oval, which begins on February 4, the team gathers in Tauranga on February 1.

Timetable of the series:

February 4–8, Tauranga, First Test

Hamilton, Second Test, February 13–17

The following players represent New Zealand: Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitch Santner, Neil Wagner, Kane Williamson, Will Young, Tom Blundell, Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, and Will O’Rourke (for the second Test only).
