Review of “All India Rank”: excellent for the curriculum, but not very entertaining

Yes, an aspirational tale. A romantic aspect, yes. Families and friends, yes. Check for self-realization and redemption. Check for convincing performance. “All India Rank,” Varun Grover’s directorial debut, meets most of the requirements for a solid movie but lacks entertainment value. The film starring Bodhisattva Sharma and Samta Sudiksha, albeit having a realistic tale and an emotional graph of characters, falls flat and seems a little shallow.

How can a movie about middle-class parents pressuring their children to enroll at IIT and the ensuing struggle be entertaining? However, “12th Fail,” which was just published, is a fantastic illustration of a moving movie that keeps you interested.

The production studio TVF has also produced many programs centered on the coaching class industry and the development of Kota as India’s “IIT factory.” But as everyone has seen in the news, the city is now dreaded as the “Suicide Factory” because of the rapidly rising number of students taking their own lives under duress.

Despite having so much, ‘All India Rank’ ends up being a cliched depressing tale you hear your distant relative tell about their miserable time in college.

However, it would be incorrect to characterize Varun Grover, the lyricist and writer,’s first effort as a failure since the team’s sincere attempts are clearly evident. The cast’s performance is one area where the movie succeeds. In order to become Vivek, Bodhisattva Sharma gives up all trace of his acting career and inhabits the role flawlessly.

His parents, Shashi Bhushan and Geeta Agrawal, have a certain chemistry that many leading ladies are unable to match. Your hearts will be filled with their lighthearted banter and tender moments of affection. When a young guy terrorizes Geeta’s character, her husband comforts her into thinking he is her Shaktiman and would defend her—even if it takes going outside the law to do so. While Samta Sudiksha is charming when she plays the girl in love with Physics, her character stays on the surface, much like the movie.

Every character in the work has a distinct trajectory, which is indicative of Varun Grover’s empathy. You sympathize with Vivek as he crumbles under the weight of his circumstances, but you also feel bad for the parents who give up all of their hopes and money for their kid. Although they let difficulties go so they may develop, they also do it selflessly, even though they may have selfish hopes of returning to resolve issues in their life. For many parents out there, even the little time that Vivek and his father enjoyed just before his admission examinations might serve as a teaching.

Grover rushes to tie up all the loose ends in an attempt to create a cohesive movie, which causes some threads to come free. We thought there should have been more of the instructor, who inspires her pupils with Bollywood songs and information, instead of only Sheeba Chadha’s Bundela ma’am.

Varun’s musical taste also receives high marks since the majority of the songs—particularly the opening track, “Noodle sa dil”—are absolute hits. The inexperienced filmmaker cleverly injects humor into the story via drawings and visuals. In addition, he skillfully transports you back in time by creating Lucknow and Kota in the 1990s, complete with recognizable landmarks and scenes.

Seeing Vivek playing video games at a parlor or with his Walkman on makes you feel a wave of nostalgia. The majority of us have done it and been there. The video covers India’s progress and prosperity as it celebrated its 50th year of independence, and the details are astounding. In the middle of all of that, there’s a particularly funny scene when one of the characters says “Azaadi” instead of “Swatantra” since it’s “Urdu.”

‘Euler’s identity’ is the formula that is often acknowledged as an example of profound mathematical beauty. The filmmaker, who refers to ‘All India Rank’ as his semi-biography, begins and finishes it with this formula. Varun Grover expresses out loud via Vivek how, despite the fact that certain basic relationships in our life may not make sense at first, they ultimately have a significant impact on who we end up being.
